CPT: How to Do Internships on Your F-1 Visa

Curricular Practical Training lets you work in your field while enrolled. It's the pathway to co-ops, internships, and required fieldwork - but the 12-month full-time cap is a career-defining rule that every F-1 student must understand.

Last verified: March 2026 - cross-referenced with USCIS.gov and official university sources. Visa rules change - always confirm with your DSO.
Important: CPT authorization must come from your DSO before you start work - not before you apply. This guide is informational only and not legal advice.

CPT Eligibility Requirements

You must have been enrolled for at least one full academic year (2 semesters) before your first CPT

CPT must be an integral part of your degree curriculum - required or for academic credit

Your DSO must authorize CPT before you begin work - working without authorization is a serious status violation

Graduate students in programs that require immediate CPT may be eligible in their first year (check with DSO)

CPT authorization is per-employer, per-semester - each internship requires a new authorization

Risks That Can End Your Status

The 12-month full-time CPT trap

Using CPT full-time (20+ hours/week) for 12 or more months makes you permanently ineligible for OPT. This is a hard rule with no exceptions. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, protect those 12 months carefully. Many students doing year-long co-ops don't realize until it's too late.

!

Working before DSO authorization

You cannot start a CPT job until your I-20 shows the CPT authorization - not after you've applied, not after verbal confirmation. The authorization is an endorsement on your I-20. Get the updated document first.

i

CPT at an unauthorized employer

CPT authorization is employer-specific. If you change companies mid-internship, you need a new CPT authorization. Starting work at a different employer than listed on your I-20 is unauthorized employment.

i

Part-time CPT during a required full-time semester

Some schools require full-time enrollment while doing CPT. Check your school's policy - particularly for thesis students or during capstone semesters. Dropping below full-time without a reduced course load authorization can trigger a status violation.
